Did you just read that? 9 Years old! I have to deduce that the reason for this greatly reduced life expectancy just 88 years ago was because many children born with Down Syndrome have other health complications. If these other complications are not addressed (heart issues, thyroid issues, sleep apnea, GI issues, etc) and these children were also routinely placed into institutions, as was the practice of the times, they were not being given a chance.
It pains my heart when I read this fact, but I am so thankful for medical advances, human rights advances, and the fact that the current life expectancy for those with Down Syndrome is 60+ years and counting. I need every single one of those years with this little guy.
